SOME quirky residents are lurking in Hunsworth.

Gardens and front doors are being inhabited by characters from storybooks and films for the annual Scarecrow Festival.

The Gruffalo, Mary Poppins and characters from Despicable Me 2 are among residents who have pitched up in the village until August 17.

There is also a nod to the recent Grand Depart and super heroes including Spiderman are among creative displays.

Janice Barlow and Paula McDonald, from Hunsworth Play Group, who have helped with the annual event, said the group decided to extend the aim was to get the community involved and also to attract more people into the village. They also hope to raise funds to buy hanging baskets and presents for the children at Christmas.

Prizes for the best three scarecrows have been sponsored by Coughbrough & Co, The Savile Arms and The Hunsworth and will be awarded on the village green at 2pm on Sunday, August 17.
