COMMONWEALTH champion cyclist Lizzie Armitstead has given her support to an Otley nurse’s plan to cycle more than 200 miles through Tanzania for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Dominic Egan, whose mother and wife died of cancer, hopes to complete the ride from the base of Mount Kilimanjaro to the start of the East Rift Valley in November as part of Global Adventure Challenge’s Unite and Bike Against Cancer event.

Lizzie, also of Otley, started Dominic’s training by signing his Yorkshire flag and wishing him good luck.

Dominic, a lecturer in nursing at the University of Bradford, said: “The challenge route is over four days and is mainly off-road trails with some climbing – it won’t be easy chased by lions, elephants and the occasional rhino.

“My challenge is dedicated to all affected by cancer, especially Sheila Egan, my late mother, and Julie Swinburne, my late wife and a former Leeds endocrine specialist nurse.”
