ABBAS Younis was installed as the Lord Mayor's Sea Cadet for the coming mayoral year at a special ceremony at Bradford's City Hall.

The 16-year-old pupil from Dixons Allerton Academy followed in the footsteps of his brother, Ummar, who was the Lord Mayor's cadet last year.

Abbas is currently studying for his GCSEs and hopes to join the Royal Navy. The charitable teenager currently helps to raise money for the annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and also assists with the Race for Life in Lister Park and joins in the Veterans and Remembrance Day services in the city.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Mike Gibbons performed the honours and was also welcomed as patron of the Sea Cadets, while Sir James Hill was made president. Both received framed photographs of the cadets along with Marine Society & Sea Cadets cuff links and a pen.

During the evening 40 awards and certificates were also presented to cadets following their annual water-based week of activities at Thrapston in Northamptonshire.
