HEAD TEACHER Gillian Evans is starting her retirement this summer as she ends a 23 year career at St Barnabas CofE primary school.

Mrs Evans joined as deputy head teacher but was quickly appointed to the top job and has served in that role until her retirement.

She is being replaced by Diane Smith who is the assistant head teacher at the Rossefield Road school in Heaton.

Mrs Smith said: "She has provided the school with lots of memorable events and has worked hard to support children and staff in many years of service and I look forwards to continuing that journey with the school."

Chairman of the school governors Ian Grant said: "Over the years she has worked tirelessly to fashion St Barnabas into what it is today - a successful and caring school.

"By caring, I mean caring for each and every member, pupil, staff and wider community."
