PUPILS at an inner city Bradford school have learned what it means to be a pillar of the community.

Year six pupils from Barkerend Primary School became the second group of children from the school to be crowned Community Champions at a special assembly on Tuesday.

They were given certificates by Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Roger L'Amie for completing the programme, which was set up and run by Places for People and supported by Bradford Council.

Over a series of interactive lessons pupils looked at what it means to be part of a neighbourhood, making the right choices, consequences of anti-social behaviour and nuisance, and people who help in their neighbourhoods and communities.

The pupils had to design and make collages based on likes and dislikes about their neighbourhoods and communities, who to go to for help, and complete worksheets to demonstrate what they have learned to achieve their status as Community Champions.

This is the second year that Places for People has run the programme at the school.

Julie Elias-Winter, who is part of the Pastoral Team at the school, added: "The teachers and children have been thrilled once again to take part in the programme aimed at our year six children, who will be leaving us at the end of this summer term to go on to their secondary schools. The programme has delivered valuable lessons around the importance of communities, looking after our neighbourhood and caring for our environment. It has also helped to familiarise our children with adults who they can approach and trust, like our community wardens and PCSOs."
