CHILDREN enjoying the sun and fun in City Park are in for an extra treat this summer as a line-up of free films and fun school activities are being offered by Bradford Council and Bradford City of Film.

Popular animation blockbusters Monsters University, The Gruffalo, TURBO and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (U) will play on Bradford's Big Screen along with How to Train Your Dragon and Despicable Me 2.

The Council will also be staging film-themed street theatre and activities around the Mirror Pool and nursery rhyme and story reading sessions in City Library.

Children will be able to play on a Spider Mountain, a special elasticated climbing web,otyrerr45ed and on bungie trampolines safely bouncing them high into the air.

There will also be giant games, such as oversized dominoes, Connect 4 and Jenga and the chance to make and launch giant rockets.

In City Library there will be specially themed story telling and craft sessions, called the Mythical Maze Summer Reading Challenge.

Children visiting the library can discover the myths and legends surrounding some giant minibeasts at a Zoolab Mythical Maze workshop and listen to ‘turbulent tales of fear, fights and fabulous feats' performed by local storyteller, Eirenne the Greek Goddess of Peace.

Film and Fun Wednesdays were trialled by Bradford Council in August last year and proved to be very popular with thousands of children spending hours watching the movies and splashing around in City Park's Mirror Pool, said Coun Susan Hinchcliffe, Portfolio Holder for Employment, Skills and Culture.

She added: "This is a really great free day out for families during the summer holidays which links in with the City Library to encourage a love of reading in children.

"We hope to build on the success of last year's events when 10,000 people participated."

Film and Fun Wednesdays run from July 30 to August 27 in City Park.
