LIGHTS will be dimmed in a Cleckheaton church in a sombre service to mark the centenary of World War One.
Whitechapel Church will hold the commemoration on Monday, August 4 at 10.30pm in a service conducted by the Rev Brunel James.
At the sound of the chimes of Big Ben at 11pm, Whitechapel’s new lighting system will be successively turned off at each stroke, marking 100 years since the outbreak of the Great War and replicating the dimming of lights.
Spenborough British Legion is supporting the occasion and Branch chairman Eddie Morton said: "It is a pleasure to be invited by the congregation of Whitechapel Church to be involved in the lowering of the lights and the final extinguishment of the Legion’s Centenary Candle which signifies the lights going out all over Europe at the start of WW1. Such a service will enable everyone locally to be part of what is to be a national event."
Rev James added: "Our format will be based on what they are doing at Westminster Abbey, leaving one symbolic candle alight – the Paschal Candle representing the resurrection of Christ, the light of the world, which cannot be extinguished and this is part our wider Christian story."
