A 12-YEAR-OLD schoolboy was rushed to hospital after being hit by a car at one of Bradford's busiest junctions in an accident which caused widespread commuter chaos.

The boy was attempting to cross at the busy junction with Leeds Road, New Line and Haigh Hall Road, Greengates when he was in collision.

The vehicle involved in the incident was a silver Renault Scenic which was heading towards Shipley at about 7.45am.

The collision is not thought to have take place on a pedestrian crossing.

Emergency services raced to the scene, including contingency crews from Idle, Bingley and Fairweather Green Fire Stations, mobilised because of the official strike which was due to end at 8am.

They were called by West Yorkshire Ambulance following reports that a child was trapped under a vehicle, but the boy had been released prior to their arrival at the scene.

Social media conversations showed people had leapt from their cars to join passers-by in helping the injured boy until expert medical help arrived to take him to Leeds General Infirmary.

Despite initial fears he had suffered extensive injuries, they were later described as less serious than first thought.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman, speaking later in the day, said his injuries were "not life threatening or serious".

Leeds Road remained closed until just after 11am as traffic was diverted via other roads, leading to congestion at surrounding bottlenecks.

The incident caused disruption to bus services, including the 760 Keighley to Leeds service which runs via Bingley, Saltaire, Shipley, Greengates and Calverley.

Transdev Keighley, which operates the service, warned passengers: "Route 760 Keighley to Leeds subject to delays and diversions in both directions due to serious RTC at New Lane, Greengates."

Police interviewed the 34-year-old woman driver of the Renault Scenic, but no arrest was made at the scene.

"The incident was thoroughly investigated and roads were closed while that took place, which meant a range of diversions had to be put in place," the police spokesman said.

Now officers are appealing for anyone who saw the incident to come forward.

Throughout the day, a number of goodwill messages were posted micro-blogging site Twitter wishing the by a full recovery.

One well-wisher wrote: "I hope he's going to be alright. It looked pretty serious."

The police spokesman said: "Due to ongoing investigations we are appealing for any witnesses with information regarding the incident to contact PC Ellis of the Western Area Roads Policing Team via the 101 telephone number."
