EDUCATION bosses have been asked to sack the governors at another Bradford secondary school after Ofsted inspectors raised concerns about the way the school has been run.

The move at Carlton Bolling College, Undercliffe, comes three months after Bradford Council took action to remove the governors at Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College as a result of concerns raised in an Ofsted inspection there.

Council leader David Green said the authority had asked the Department for Education to step in after studying a draft Ofsted report into Carlton Bolling.

It is understood that report makes a series of criticisms over the way governors have operated at the school and concluded that pupils were not adequately protected from vulnerability to extremism.

Other criticisms include the fact that school ended early on Fridays to allow for prayers, that changes had been made to accommodate Ramadan and there had been pressure to ensure the only religious teaching in school was on the Muslim faith.

A mixed pupils school trip to London had also been amended following concerns from governors, with only girls allowed to attend.

Inspectors are understood to have concluded that the school requires special measures, with the governing body presenting an obstacle to improvement.

Cllr Green said the Department for Education had been asked to replace the governors with an interim executive board.

A Department for Education spokesman said tonight: “Ofsted recently inspected Carlton Bolling and is yet to formally publish its report, so it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.

“All schools are subject to a tough inspection regime and as we have repeatedly demonstrated we will not hesitate to take firm and swift action where failings are found.

“We have received an application from the local authority to remove the governing body and put an Interim Executive Board in place at the school. We will consider the application and any representations before making a decision."

Bradford East MP David Ward said IEBs could be effective in bringing positive change quickly.

"What we know is that if schools are going to deliver successfully they need good leadership and part of that requires a strong governing body.

"They can contribute to impeding or raising attainment. If Ofsted are of the view it is impeding it, something needs to happen. It is in the interests of children and parents that they get the education they are entitled to," he said.

Mr Ward added that he would be "surprised" if the school was seen to be failing in terms of academic achievement.

The chairman of governors at Carlton Bolling College is Councillor Faisil Khan. He could not be contacted for comment. Cllr Khan (Ind, Bradford Moor) was also on the governing body at Laisterdyke when that was replaced earlier this year.

Carlton Bolling College received a rating of 'good' in its last Ofsted inspection early last year but was among the schools subjected to an emergency inspection by Ofsted as a result of concerns over the potential influence of governors in the wake of the ‘Trojan Horse’ controversy in Birmingham.
