Cyclists gathered to ride in tribute to a member of their club who died suddenly aged 41.

Friends and family of Andrew Kellett were left shocked and devastated when the super-fit Ilkley Cycle Club member suffered a fatal heart attack.

Andrew, who had been a member of Ilkley Cycle Club for 12 months, cycled 20 miles every evening, in all weathers and a further 40 to 50 miles at weekends. He also regularly ran half-marathons, raising money for a variety of charities, including Marie Curie, Sue Ryder and Overgate Hospice.

His father Stuart Kellett, of Shelf, said his son's death had come without warning. "He was gardening when he had heart attack on June 16 this year. There was no warning whatsoever. He had not even been to the doctors for 13 years. I would not wish what has happened on my worst enemy - it has been awful."

Mr Kellett, 67, said Andrew, who was single and lived in Horton Bank Top, Bradford, was a member of Aire Valley Club Club for 20 years, an off road cycle club. When they dispersed he carried on cycling and decided to join Ilkley club to do more road cycling.

The last ever cycle ride Andrew did with the Ilkley Cycle Club was the Craven Loop and in tribute to him, more than 35 cyclists gathered at 8.40am on Sunday to set off on that same ride.

The 45-mile round trip, organised by Robin O'Connor, of Ilkley Cycle Club, saw them go from Ilkley to Steeton, Sutton-in-Craven, on to Lothersdale, Carlton, Skipton and Halton Heights, with a coffee stop at Skipton. They then made their way back to Ilkley.

"They put an invite on Facebook for anyone who wanted to take part in the ride and I wanted to go down and see them off and give them my best wishes," said Mr Kellett.

"Andrew just loved his bikes. He had not been at Ilkley Cycle Club that long but everyone had a good word for him when I was down there on Sunday."

He added: "Andrew would do anything for anyone. He was a quiet lad and kept himself to himself, but he did so much for charity - half marathons, including The Great North Run, as well as swimming and cycling.

"I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and sympathy. It is so nice that they were really concerned. His family appreciate it."

Andrew, who worked as a printer for Bakers and Lord printers in Bradford, leaves his parents Stuart and Jean Kellet and brother Mark Kellett, also of Shelf.

His funeral took place in Elland, which was well attended, including by representatives from Ilkley Cycle Club.
