Three gardening-based groups in the Bradford district are celebrating after receiving grants to help them grow for the future.

The trio was among 30 community projects to get cash from the North of England Horticultural Society.

The Friends of Prince of Wales Park, Bingley, have been awarded £1,000, while St Paul's Church in Manningham and Byron Primary School in Barkerend received £500 each.

Ruth Leman, of the Friends group, said the money would be used to help reinvigorate an area around a main entrance to the park, ahead of its 150th anniversary celebrations next year.

"We are thrilled about it," she said. "We are going to use it for restocking and replanting an area in the lower park around the fountain.

"Bradford Council is getting a new design team in to look at it. They are providing the ideas and we are providing funding for the planting.

"It will make a big impact in terms of the park main entrance - £1,000 will buy a nice amount of plants and shrubbery for that area. The flowerbeds have not been tended for a while now - we are starting again."

She added: "It is a huge task to renovate the park - this is a little piece of the jigsaw. We are bidding for different kinds of things and have been successful in getting quite a bit of different money."

St Paul’s Church will use its £500 towards helping create a safe community green space, including a wildflower meadow, bulb planting, trees, hedging and landscaping to provide study opportunities for local schools.

Byron Primary School will use its £500 for materials to support a grow your own club.

The North of England Horticultural Society is a gardening charity which supports more than 50 garden-related organisations and specialist societies. Its grants scheme started in 2012 as an extension of the charity’s mission to promote horticulture across the north of England.

Nick Smith, director of the charity's twice-yearly Harrogate Flower Shows, said: "We have been very impressed both by the variety and the quality of the applications put forward this year, and we are delighted to see the proceeds from Harrogate Flower Shows being reinvested in such worthwhile projects."
