STUDENTS at a Keighley charity are celebrating after scooping awards in a Dragons’ Den-style contest.

The seven-strong team from Woodville Activity Centre took two accolades in the annual Step Up Market Challenge.

The 12-to-19-year-olds won the honours in their age category for most profit and teamwork.

"They were absolutely amazing and the confidence boost this has given them is incredible," said Adam Craven, site manager at Woodville.

"It was the first time we had taken part and the prospect of meeting the public was nerve-wracking for some of them, but one student said to me afterwards he would now be confident in an interview situation.

"We are so proud of them all."

Hundreds of young people from across the district entered the competition, staged by Bradford Council.

They were challenged to create a product they could sell on a stall.

Shortlisted teams pitched their ideas to a panel of judges and the finalists then sold their wares at a market day in Bradford.

The Woodville team – which had made items including seed planters, bird boxes and hanging baskets from donated wood and off-cuts – raised £235.

"It was a wonderful experience and we were so pleased with how all the students performed," added Mr Craven.

"The judges loved them. Team members were only supposed to have five minutes but it was 25 before they came out!"
