THE Tour de France was not the only thing going on this weekend, as thousands of people flocked to several other events in the district.

The Yorkshire Wartime Experience, held at Hunsworth, near Cleckheaton, opened on Friday and continued into yesterday with more than 400 military vehicles on display and 70 battle re-enactment groups in attendance, re-creating scenes from the two World Wars and conflicts.

Yesterday there was even an aerial Battle of Britain memorial. Stuart Wright, one of the event’s organisers estimated between 8,000 and 10,000 visited over the weekend, despite the stiff competition. He said: “The numbers of people exceeded all our expectations, it was absolutely fantastic.”

Meanwhile Cleckheaton welcomed music fans to its 27th annual folk festival. As well as music by dozens of top bands and artists, which this year included Dougie MacLean and Wendy Arrowsmith, there were plenty of other sights, including morris dancing, a parade through the town to start the event on the Saturday and a family fun day yesterday.

Janice Minich, one of the organisers, said the event was just as busy as other years, and a lot of those in attendance were in cycling gear, most likely fresh from watching Le Tour. She said: “We thought there would be a little bit of the competition, but the number of people that have come here has been amazing.”

And families flocked to Shelf for the traditional summer gala in Shelf Hall Park, which featured a procession followed by a day of music, dance and other family activities.
