A MAN who admitted keeping two dogs in "terrible" conditions has been banned from owning any animals for a year.
Mark Bowes, of Rochester Street, Shipley, pleaded guilty to two charges in breach of the Animal Welfare Act at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court yesterday.
Prosecutor Nigel Monaghan said RSPCA inspectors had seized the dogs on April 3, after finding them underweight and "ravenously hungry" in Bowes' home, which had urine-stained newspapers on the floor and piles of animal faeces in the hallway and kitchen.
Bowes had refused to sign over control of the dogs to the RSPCA, leading to boarding and veterinary costs of more than £1,300.
In mitigation, Bowes told the court he was "truly sorry" and "hadn't been in the right frame of mind" after suffering from depression caused by losing his job.
Aside from his 12-month ban, he was ordered to transfer care of the dogs to the RSPCA, and pay costs totalling £210, with a £20 victim surcharge.
