Cycle race chaos as fire engine gets trapped under finish line

11:37am Thursday 3rd July 2014

SPECTATORS at last night's Otley Cycle Race witnessed some unexpected drama when a fire engine got stuck on the course in the middle of one of the main races, backing up many of the cyclists.

The engine was called out from Otley Fire Station partway through the races, at around 7.50pm, after reports of a fire alarm going off at a residential property. However the crew found their route to the suspected blaze blocked off by the scaffolding signifying the route's finish line. While the engine was stopped, cyclists racing in the Chevin Classic had to wait behind the engine. After a short time, race crew lifted the scaffolding to allow the engine passed underneath.

The race was then re started.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the call was a false alarm.
