Cycle race chaos as fire engine gets trapped under finish line

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: The scaffolding had to be lifted to allow the fire engine to pass underneath at Otley cycle races The scaffolding had to be lifted to allow the fire engine to pass underneath at Otley cycle races

SPECTATORS at last night's Otley Cycle Race witnessed some unexpected drama when a fire engine got stuck on the course in the middle of one of the main races, backing up many of the cyclists.

The engine was called out from Otley Fire Station partway through the races, at around 7.50pm, after reports of a fire alarm going off at a residential property. However the crew found their route to the suspected blaze blocked off by the scaffolding signifying the route's finish line. While the engine was stopped, cyclists racing in the Chevin Classic had to wait behind the engine. After a short time, race crew lifted the scaffolding to allow the engine passed underneath.

The race was then re started.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the call was a false alarm.

What absolute Schoolboy error planning failure.
Lucky this time it was just a fire alarm, when people are trapped in a fire every second counts.
A very short sharp lesson in getting it wrong.
Please think more carefully next time, closing roads for events does not mean people will not need emergency services living beyond the closure.

We hear the term Lesson will be learnt, but by God do they need to be this morning.
