YOUNGSTERS in Keighley have handed over £812 to a UK charity helping people made destitute by the Syrian Civil War.
Pupils and staff from four local primary schools – St Andrew's, Victoria, St Joseph's and Riddlesden St Mary's – presented the cash to a representative from Dewsbury-based charity SKT Welfare.
The children had taken part in non-uniform days, and some of them had also sold cakes during school break time.
The money was handed over in Keighley Town Hall Chamber. The pupils received certificates from the charity acknowledging their contribution.
SKT Welfare trustee Asif Hussain, who received the donated money on behalf of his group, staged a presentation on Syria explaining how badly the funding is needed.
Keighley Town Councillor Amjid Ahmed, who approached local schools to drum up support for the cause of Syrian refugees, said he was very pleased with the total sum raised.
"It was good to see people putting time and effort into this," he added. Visit sktwelfare.org for more details on the charity's work.
