A PIONEERING same-day surgical treatment to remove non-cancerous tumours from the womb has become available for women on the NHS at a Bradford clinic.

The 30-minute procedure, called MyoSure, removes fibroids and polyps from the womb without the need for either local anaesthetic or an intrusive operation.

The walk-in treatment is now being carried out at Bradford's Westwood Park Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, Swift Lane and is available to NHS patients in Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven.

MyoSure affects more than 50,000 women in the UK and its side affects include heavy periods, bleeding between periods, abdominal pain and lower back pain.

The symptoms can be so bad for women that they are forced to have days off work or unable to do social activities.

MyoSure reduces menstrual bleeding caused by fibroids or polyps and does not harm the womb lining and particularly helps women who plan to have children in the future.

Fibroids are non-cancerous tumours, which grow on, or in, the muscle lining of the womb. They affect 70 per cent of white women and 80 per cent of black women by the time they turn 50.

The Bradford and Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven, or NHS Bradford, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) commission the service after Bradford became the latest part of the country to take on this one-time treatment.

The CCGs are made up of all of the GP practices in the area and serves a population of 330,115 from Heaton, Tong, Saltaire, Bingley and Shipley.

MyoSure joins Novasure endometrial ablation, which reduces women's need for a hysterectomy, are part of the hysteroscopy service available to women in the Bradford district.

Patients are asked to consult their GP first to see if MyoSure is the right treatment for them and referrals can then be made.

Dr Anne Connolly, the CCG's clinical speciality lead for women's health, welcomed the new procedure in Bradford.

She said: "I'm delighted that we're now able to provide this service locally for women who suffer from the often debilitating pain and other problems of fibroids and polyps.

"They can be in and out of our clinic in just a couple of hours and back to their normal daily lives.

"This is also an excellent procedure for women who may have fertility issues due to fibroids or polyps and would like to get pregnant in the future."
