BRIGHT-red poppies are bringing a splash of colour to the Bradford district.

The flowers have been planted by Bradford Council as part of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One.

Councillor Jeanette Sunderland welcomed the addition of the flowers, paying particular praise to a colourful batch on the edge of the city centre at the bottom of Leeds Road.

"There are two big flowerbeds either side of the road featuring a magnificent display of poppies," said Cllr Sunderland . "They were planted as a memorial and a gentle reminder of World War One."

She added: "It has been a very much unthanked gesture and probably something that people have not even noticed. They are in flowerbeds across the district - a big thank you to people from the parks department.

"It is a fitting reminder of what happened in the fields."
