YOUNGSTERS at a Worth Valley school have been selling personalised friendship bracelets to raise cash for a pair of charities.

The group of year six children at Oxenhope Primary School decided to take on the challenge of selling the accessories, called Loom Bands, to help Save the Children and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Each of the woven bracelets is being sold off for 50 pence, with most going to other pupils, though some have also been bought by parents and adult visitors to the school.

Class teacher Alice Jones said she was very proud that the pupils had wanted to do something so constructive.

"They came to me and said they wanted to help these two charities, which they had chosen themselves," she said.

"They've raised £30 so far, and they are aiming for £100. It's a valuable learning experience for them, because they've been taking orders, writing letters to parents and using their maths skills.

"Each bracelet is unique and when we held a Spanish week in the school they were making bracelets in the red and yellow colours of the Spanish flag.

"The bracelets are going down a storm. The pupils really love buying them and everyone has been very enthusiastic and supportive."
