A £100,000 mountain bike trail will open in a Bradford school next month, providing a boost to both pupils and the wider community.

Appleton Academy in Wyke will open the extensive trail on July 1, a first for a school in the region.

Once it is up and running it will not only be used by the school, but also opened up to bike and BMX groups and for community use.

Fully funded by the school, the track, which is similar to those used in competitions, is part of a push to make the school a major centre for sports in Bradford and the wider areas.

The school expects it will attract cycling enthusiasts from far and wide to try out the trail.

The school in Woodside Road is no stranger to public facilities - it is already home to Wyke public library.

Appleton Academy, which has pupils ranging in age from three to 19, opened in 2012 and already has a wide range of sports facilities, including indoor and outdoor climbing walls, a gym and astroturf pitch.

When the school was built the idea was that all the sports facilities would be open to the public, making the school an important tool in the fight to get people of all ages more active.

The finishing touches are now being made to the track, with the hope that it will be ready for the school's cycle themed "Tour De Appleton" event on June 30.

Craig Armitage, who works at the school, said the track was part of Appleton's plan to make the school a leader in outdoor education.

He said: "This is part of what we're doing to improve local facilities.

"We want it open to the public and it will be something that is unique for a school to be building. It has had the backing of major sporting groups like British Cycling.

"When schools are built now there is a push to make them available to the public. We have a big push on outdoor education at the school, and facilities like this really do attract students to the school."

The sports facilities are being managed by Schools Plus, and manager for the Appleton facilities, James Hirst, is looking for people who can run mountain bike classes at the soon to open track, or use the site for competitions.

Anyone interested in using the track can e-mail him on James.hirst@schools-plus.org.
