A Palestinian woman showed her support for striking firefighters when she visited Fairweather Green fire station in Bradford.

Nawal Slemiah, founder and director of embroidery co-operative Women in Hebron, made a banner for the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) ahead of more strike action on Saturday.

Miss Slemiah is in West Yorkshire as a guest of FBU secretary Dave Williams, who said: "She is a supporter of the FBU's cause. She is a strong socialist - being in Palestine, you would expect that sort of thing."

Mr Williams said Miss Slemiah had made a hand-embroidered trade union banner for the FBU, and added: "She built up her own company. These women come together and produce embroidered goods."

Women in Hebron is a Palestinian non-profit fair trade cooperative. It aims to provide women in the Hebron district with the resources to provide for themselves and their families through the production and sales of Palestinian handicraft items.
