THE Bradford family of a seven-year-old liver transplant patient going for gold at the British transplant games are hoping to raise thousands of pounds to give others a winning chance too.

Sister-in-laws Lesley and Amy Walton are organising a family fun day at Bradford City's home ground on Saturday, June 21 to raise as much money as possible.

Stalls, popcorn, a fun fair and bouncy castle will be just some of the fun lined up from11am to 4pm. It costs £350 for each child to go and join in the games which this year will be at Bolton for one week starting on August 7.

Lesley's brother Joseph, now seven, has already got his place in the games with support from City's One In A Million charity and will be hoping to bring back medals for his efforts in Badminton and relay but there are other young patients at Leeds General Infirmary's Little Livers and Renal Unit, including Bradford children, who have been too poorly to get the fee organised.

Mrs Walton, of Thornton, who is 26 and has two boys of her own, said: "We want to make sure no one who wants to go to the games misses out. Joseph was really lucky that we got the money but there are some children who have been too poorly to fundraise."

Joseph, who has now moved from Bradford with his parents to a village near Hornsea, was only eight-months-old when he had his transplant and is still under the care of the LGI which has one of only three Little Liver units in the whole of the country giving specialist support to young liver patients - the others are in Birmingham and London.

Mrs Walton said: "We're hoping to raise a few thousand at the fun day and we've got a black-tie event coming up soon to help us raise even more.

"Joseph is such a happy little boy despite everything he has to go through. He melts the hearts of everyone who meets him but here are lots of other children just as special as him and we'd love them to be able to go to the games as well."

Joseph, who had a liver transplant as a baby is due to have his tonsils out next week but the thought of going to the games next month is something for him to look forward to.

There are still some tables left for anyone wanting to run a stall on Saturday, the cost is £50 to £100 - to find out more e-mail mrslwalton@yahoo.co.uk or telephone 07885 538927.

Once the event has taken place, they are hoping to register a charity called Walton Foundation which will raise money for children who needing transplants across the UK.
