An Oakenshaw charity is nursing a dog back to health after it was thrown from a bridge into a canal.

Four-year-old staffie Bertie was pulled out of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal by students who saw a man in a white shirt throwing him off a bridge in Leeds city centre into the canal 25 feet below.

Hearthounds, set up to help homeless dogs and based on Fairview, was called to take the dog in after the incident late on Friday afternoon.

Although he is expected to make a full recovery, Hearthounds needs to raise money for vet bills, expected to cost thousands of pounds.
