World-renowned triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee are playing a major role in a new scheme to urge families to take part in more physical activity this summer.
The brothers, who both attended Bradford Grammar School and shot to prominence while members of Bingley Harriers, want the country to capitalise on the current climate of excitement ahead of major sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games.
Alistair Brownlee, who won the gold medal in the triathlon at the London 2012 Olympics, and Jonny, who took the bronze, have used their world class sporting experiences to help compile a week’s worth of fun family activities for the Spring Bank Holiday.
The brothers have teamed up with Warburtons to celebrate a summer of sport with a new event called the ‘Half & Half-Term Games.’ Research released by Warburtons today suggests that this summer’s high-profile sporting events will inspire a third of children and over a quarter of parents to take part in more physical activity.
Alistair said: “This is an exciting time for my brother and I, as we await the announcement of this summer’s Commonwealth Games team.
“It will be a tremendously proud moment to be called up to be part of Team England for the first time and become involved in an event, which has such a positive effect on families across the country.
“We are thrilled to work with Warburtons on the Half & Half-Term Games.
“With one in five parents seeking easier ways to encourage their kids to get active and over 40 per cent of adults highlighting the need for more kids’ sports activities in their local area – the family favourite games, which include The Short Jump and Mini Kids Relay can be easily recreated, without cost, at home, in the garden or even in local parks,” said Alistair.
Jonny said: “I remember watching The Olympic Games as a kid and was just itching to get out for a run or bike ride. It’s so important that we capitalise on the current climate of excitement ahead of the Commonwealth Games, to inspire kids to be more active and we believe our Warburtons Half & Half Term Games will do just that.”
