A firefighter who has “enjoyed just about every minute” of his job is retiring after 25 years.

Martin Shaw, of Silsden, is calling time on a career that has seen him serve at Bingley and Illingworth fire stations.

“It has been great,” said the 50-year-old. “It has been a good job and a good career. I have enjoyed just about every minute of it.

“It has been very rewarding - I will miss it.”

Mr Shaw’s last shift is tonight before he heads to Wembley to watch Derby County in the Championship play-off final.

On his retirement, he said: “I am looking forward to it – it has been a long time coming.”

Alan Wood, watch manager at Bingley station, who started on the same training course as Mr Shaw in 1988 said: “He has been an absolutely brilliant member of the shift. We will be really sorry to see him go. It is a big loss for us and our station.”

Mr Shaw, who is married to Johanna and has three sons will continue as a retained firefighter at Silsden fire station.
