A professional figure skater and former Olympian has visited Bradford to pass on his experience to budding district ice skaters.

Gary Beacom, who competed for Canada in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, delivered a masterclass to more than 40 members of Bradford Ice Skating Club at the city’s Ice Arena.

Mr Beacom, who was also crowned World Professional Figure Skating Champion in 1988, gave a practical demonstration on the ice before a question-and-answer session, handing out advice such as how to keep skates in the best condition for competing.

Club committee member Adrian Patrick said they had been keen to secure a masterclass with the star on one of his rare visits to the UK. He said: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and it was really beneficial to our skaters and our coaches.”

He added: “We had members aged from five to 50 at the session and everyone thought it was great fun.”
