A barman described as a ‘legend’ who was killed when a caravan toppled on him will be remembered at a fundraising fun day next weekend.

Friends and colleagues at The George pub in Cleckheaton hope the event on Sunday, May 25 will raise heaps of money for Help for Heroes.

Former Yorkshire regiment soldier Dom Goddard was a popular face behind the bar at The George before his shock death in December last year.

Mr Goddard, who was a pupil at Whitcliffe Mount School, Cleckheaton, had been walking home in the early hours from a party when the accident happened in Church Lane, Gomersal.

The road had to be closed from its junction with Muffit Lane for several hours while firefighters fought to rescue Mr Goddard.

Yorkshire Ambulance sent a rapid response vehicle, ambulance, doctor and hazardous area response unit to the scene, but despite all their efforts he could not be saved.

Mr Goddard’s bar manager and one of his many best friends, Adam Barnborough, said what happened that night was still a mystery.

“No-one really knows what actually happened but it was a freak accident, we think he just slipped off the kerb.

“It was such a shock. He was a livewire, unstoppable – an absolute legend in many ways. Time does heal but you still miss a friend. This is our way of remembering him.

“Next Wednesday would have been his birthday, it’s us putting on a party for him. He’d have liked that,” he said.

The fun starts at The George, in Parkside, from 1pm with ten music acts booked throughout the day on an outdoor stage, as well as a bouncy castle, auction and raffle.

The top prize will be a 2011 Fiat Punto donated by Tradecars Cleckheaton. Other prizes include two tickets to Flamingoland, tickets to a Bradford Bulls game, entry to a Yorkshire county cricket match and meals out.
