A husband and wife team helping pull a barge from Liverpool to Leeds to raise cash for a cancer charity got a little help from Bradford’s Lord Mayor when they hauled into Bingley.
Mayor Khadim Hussain joined the team, including nurse Emma Fisher, 32, and her husband Gavin, 34, of Cote Farm Lane, Thackley, at the famous Five Rise Locks in the morning rain.
Mr and Mrs Fisher are hoping to cover the 127 miles in only five days in memory of a non-smoking friend killed by the disease and raise £20,000 for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.
Julie Robinson, 48, of Leeds, defied doctors by surviving for 21 months after they gave her only eight weeks when she was diagnosed with aggressive small cell disease.
Along they way they have been supported by wellwishers, including some welcome muscle from the Keighley Cougars who helped on a stretch from Silsden.
“I was at the launch and said I’d promote the cause, so I came along. I didn’t actually pull on the rope - but did have a go with the barge pole!” said Coun Hussain.
