A Bradford DJ will be spinning the decks and raising funds on her 50th birthday in memory of her mother who died of cancer.

Ellen Boyle has organised her birthday with a difference featuring a series of events in the city on Saturday.

Her mother, Fay, lost her eight-year fight with myeloma last August, aged 72.

Now Ellen hopes to raise up to £4,000 for Myeloma UK from the day.

The memorial festivities start at the Ginger Goose, in Market Street, where children can meet Disney characters, including Winnie the Pooh, from noon until 4pm.

From 1pm, The City Vaults, in Hustlergate will host the best local musical talent at an acoustic set, including Bradley Hamilton.

The Elements will be performing UB40, The Specials and Madness hits at the Lord Clyde, Thornton Road, from 3pm.

Ellen, who lives in Eccleshill, will close the day’s celebrations with a DJ set herself at the Ginger Goose, from 8pm, where she will playing the best in soul music. Ska and reggae band Trenchtown will also be performing and a raffle will be held.

Ellen, who also works as events and promotion manager at the Ginger Goose, said: “Myeloma is one of the lesser known cancers. This event is a great way of making people aware.

“My 50th birthday is a day regrettably, my mother will never see, that’s why I have chosen to dedicate this special day to supporting Myeloma UK.

“I didn’t feel like having a birthday party without her but thought this was the next best thing, to raise funds.

“It should be a great day, it’s a 50th birthday with a difference. It’s going to be very busy. I will be doing other charity events around the year.”

Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is a cancer arising from plasma cells, a type of cell made in the bone marrow that forms of your immune system. It only represents one per cent of all cancers, with 4,700 people diagnosed with myeloma each year in the UK.
