With less than a fortnight to go until Crocus Week, our brave abseilers have been checking out what’s in store for them.

During the campaign week, which runs from May 10 to 18, individuals, groups, schools and businesses are encouraged to hold a fundraiser towards our £1 million appeal to help researchers at Bradford University in their fight against cancer.

The week starts with an abseil down the side of the Jurys Inn hotel in the city centre. The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Khadim Hussain, will be one of those scaling the city centre building, along with University staff and Telegraph & Argus colleagues.

Anyone can join the abseil. Development officer at the University Victoria Collins said: “There is still time to sign up to the abseil on May 10, this is a great opportunity to raise money for a local cause, to challenge yourself to do something out of the ordinary and above all to have fun.

“You can sign up on your own or as a group with friends, family and colleagues.”

Among those taking part are a T&A team include digital marketing executive Helen Bates and some members of the reporting team.

Helen said she was starting to feel nervous.

“I have a personal experience from losing my auntie to cancer so abseiling down a building to raise money for the Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal is the least that I can do,” she said.

The appeal, which is being run by Bradford University, Yorkshire Cancer Research, Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust and the T&A, aims to raise £1 million to buy a specialist machine which could speed up researching cancer treatments.

T&A receptionist Natalie Belcher is also taking part in the abseil, along with education reporter Chris Young, customer service assistant Amy Wilson, classified telesales manager Daniel Bailey, local digital sales consultant Sam Mizaan and telesales executive Georgina Taylor.Mr Bailey said: “I’m looking forward to the abseil as it’s a great cause we are doing this for and the money you donate goes a long way to helping the fight against cancer.”

The abseil will be on Saturday, May 10, between 11.30am and 6pm at Jurys Inn, Bradford. Registration is £10 with a minimum sponsorship of £100.

To sign-up for the abseil or if you are a group wanting to back Crocus Week, e-mail v. collins@bradford.ac.uk. or call (01274) 233165.

Schools who hold an event will be entered into a drawer to win up to £500 of book vouchers.
