The construction of the Westfield shopping centre in Bradford might be progressing quickly but construction workers paused for a minute yesterday as a mark of respect to those injured or killed while at work in the building trade. The event was organised to mark the International Workers’ Memorial Day, with the intention of drawing attention to the fact that laws and regulations are there to protect the workforce. According to an estimate by the TUC there were 20,000 work-related deaths in the country last year. Bradford Area Safety Reps Association was behind the Bradford event, choosing a safety theme ‘We love red tape better than bloody bandages’.
