A national sporting hero will open a new £350,000 sports pavilion in Bradford.

Former England and Leeds United goalkeeper Nigel Martyn will unveil the new facilities at Rawdon Meadows, at Apperley Bridge, tomorrow.

The cost was met by organisations including the Premier League, Football Association and the Government’s Sport England body. The Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund has chipped in £98,000 towards replacing an old pavilion with facilities to cope with modern needs, including four team changing rooms, two officials’ changing rooms, a club room, kitchen and indoor archery range.

The development is the result of a partnership between Woodhouse Grove School and Bradford Council and will mean the school can extend its sporting activities.

It will also mean community sports clubs including the Bronte Archers, Bradford City Women’s Football Club and cricket teams in the area will benefit from the facilities. West Riding FA was involved in securing the £98,000 used to part-fund the project.

David Humphreys, headmaster at Woodhouse Grove School, said: “The provision of this substantial new sports pavilion is a visible sign to the whole community of the way the school works in partnership with the Council and our local community to develop amateur and professional sport.”

Sally Thackray, chairman of Bradford City Women’s Football Club, said: “We have been playing at Rawdon Meadows for a number of years and the pitches have always been among the best in the area. The changing facilities did not meet the same standard and for many years we helped to campaign for better facilities.

“The new facilities are excellent and we are now able to offer decent changing facilities in addition to well maintained pitches to our visiting opponents. The new facilities are the result of many years hard work campaigning and good team work to get the building designed and erected.”

The chief executive of the Football Foundation Paul Thorogood said: “The Football Foundation is responsible for managing and delivering The Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, which is funded by the Premier League, The FA and the government, via Sport England. This outstanding changing pavilion is an example of the positive impact that this funding is having on our grassroots game. First-class facilities like this are crucial to creating more opportunities for local people to enjoy regular sport.”

As part of the work, the existing footpath from Shipley to Leeds has been re-routed to take advantage of an improved riverside view.
