The life of a Bingley teacher, who taught until three days before she died of cancer, will be celebrated at a special charity concert next month.

A Night To Remember Mo is the title of the event in honour of Mo Hooley, who was head of chemistry at St Mary’s School in Menston, where she worked for 17 years until her death in February at the age of 55.

And performing at the Octagon nightspot, Sandbeds, Keighley, on May 1, will be upcoming indie-folk band The Dunwells, just back from a US tour and whose line-up includes three former pupils of St Mary’s.

The concert will raise money for Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope, which provided care and support for Mrs Hooley and her family.

Her husband Jed, who has taught geography at St Mary’s for 34 years, said he was delighted with the response to the fundraiser.

“We’ve already sold 200 tickets, which is nearly half of the total and it’s all going to help Manorlands at Oxenhope who provided such wonderful palliative care,” he said.

“What they do is ongoing, and myself and our two children – Kathryn, who’s 18 and James, who’s 15 – still go there for counselling. And we’re on their books for as long as we need it.”

Mrs Hooley, who had two other children and was also a grandmother, died after 16 months of battling the disease. She had taught in schools in Leeds and Bradford since 1981, including Tong School and the City Technology College.

She stopped teaching in school in June 2013 because of the infection risks during her treatment. However, she continued to tutor pupils in chemistry until three days before she died.

“Despite her treatment, Mo was always happy and put others first,” Mr Hooley said.

“Students called her ‘Mrs Hooley’ and to all staff she was just “Mo.”

“This is a chance for lots of Mo’s friends to celebrate a short but brilliant life. She touched so many and so many want to remember her.”.

Tickets for the event cost £7.50 and details are available from St Mary's School. Telephone (01943) 883000 and ask for Cath Chattoe or contact the Octagon on (01274) 562252.
