Firefighters from the Bradford district are among those tackling a huge blaze at a chemicals store in Leeds.

Crews from Bradford, Fairweather Green, Shipley, Rawdon and Cleckheaton fire stations are helping to man 20 fire appliances at the incident in Albion Way in Armley, and residents in that area are being asked to keep windows and doors closed.

A spokesman said the “large building fire” had spread to another property and two aerial appliances and numerous specialist appliances were also at the scene.

In total, about 100 firefighters have been battling the flames.

Witnesses have posted Twitter pictures of the huge blaze, which has sent thick black plumes of smoke high into the air.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the force was called at about 2.30am today to a fire which had taken hold at a building used by packaging firm Tradepak.

The Armley Gyratory road has been closed as a precaution due to the smoke. It was later re-opened but other streets around the site on the industrial estate itself remain closed.

The spokesman added: "The matter is being treated as a large building fire by firefighters but, as with any fire producing large amounts of smoke, nearby residents are being urged to keep doors and windows closed while the smoke clears.”
