UKIP has won the by-election for a seat on Keighley Town Council, it was announced yesterday.
Its candidate George Firth polled 366 votes in the Fell Lane and Westburn ward with his only challenger Mohammed Ansar Ali (Ind) picking up 104 votes.
The by-election was held on Thursday following the death of town councillor Brian Hudson in January. The turnout was 14.6 per cent.
Mr Firth, 48, spent 16 years driving coaches across Europe and has lived in Keighley since 2006.
He said: “I’m humbled by all the votes cast for me. I didn’t expect that amount of support.
“I’d like to offer my condolences to the family of Councillor Hudson. He did a lot of work for the area and I hope to be able to step into his shoes.”
Mr Firth has also been chosen as a UKIP candidate for the Keighley Central ward in the election for Bradford Council which take place on May 22.
