Chemicals and firearms were found when counter-terrorism police raided a house in Liversedge, officers revealed today.

The property in Penn Drive was targeted as part of an investigation into suspected drugs offences. Chemicals were also found at an address in Dewsbury during yesterday’s operation.

Two men – one from Liversedge and one from Dewsbury – were arrested.

The Liversedge man, aged 43, was arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, firearms offences and conspiracy to produce class A drugs.

The 42-year-old Dewsbury man was arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, and conspiracy to produce class A drugs.

Police said a number of “potentially suspicious items” were also found at the Liversedge address.

The investigation is being led by the North East Counter Terrorism Unit.

Superintendent Julie Sykes, of the Kirklees division, said: “We recognise that local people may have concerns as a result of this activity and would like to reassure them that the property is not believed to present any risk. If at any point the material is believed to present a risk to local people, the necessary safety measures will be activated.”

Tests are being carried out on the chemicals and other items.
