A primary school in Bradford suffered serious fire damage to two floors after a suspected arson attack last night.

A plastic table and other materials were piled against a ground floor door and set on fire at Lister Primary School in Manningham.

The blaze spread into a classroom and then to a room above and also into adjoining toilets.

The alarm was raised at 7.20pm and firecrews from Idle, Fairweather Green and Shipley managed to control the blaze after 45 minutes.

Crews from Bradford and Odsal also attended the incident at the school off Scotchman Road.

“Luckily it is quite a modern building and the fire did not spread too far, nevertheless it did quite a bit of damage” said watch commander Dave Burland, of Idle fire station.

“It appears the heat from the burning table against the door may have broken the glass allowing the fire into the building."
