Extension plan for Cow and Calf snack kiosk rejected

First published in News

Plans to extend a snack kiosk by Ilkley’s Cow and Calf Rocks landmark and create an indoor seating area for visitors have been turned down by planners.

Bradford Council’s Keighley and Shipley Area Planning Panel has refused permission for the single storey extension and refurbishment of an underground tank at the Cow and Cow Cafe, Hangingstone Road.

The plan had the support of Ilkley Parish Council, which asked for it to be put before a planning panel if officers were minded to refuse it.

But Bradford councillors agreed with the officers’ recommendation to refuse planning permission.

The site is in a Green Belt area.

In their decision notice, the council said: “The extension would add a substantial amount of new structure that would be prominently positioned.

"It would amount to a disproportionate extension over and above the size of the original building and would have a materially greater impact than the present building on the openness of the green belt and the purposes of including the land in it.

“It is not considered that very special circumstances exist sufficient to justify the harm that will be caused to the Green Belt by virtue of being inappropriate development and its height and scale.”

This Conservative Government is doing its best to encourage business but is thwarted at every turn by the Socialists. They should realise, as the Government does, that areas of natural beauty must be exploited to the full to generate the maximum amount of tourist income. Nationalised Parks should be privatised. Common ownership is communism.

The only reason for wanting to extend is so the owner can make more money. Its not as if when extended it will create more than a couple of jobs at best. Yes by all means exploit the countryside for tourism but it makes no sense to extend here as it will bring no more tourism to the area. It been the same their for years and i have visited every year for the last 30 and no one has complained about the cafe size.

The Conservative Government is being thwarted by the global economy, which isn't all that healthy. Britain is out of recession, but we still need more jobs and more wealth before we see the genuine return of tourism. A pub opposite Ilkley Station is for sale again, which is a sure indication that all is not well. Even if this scheme got planning permission it wouldn't do anything for the local economy. Areas of natural beauty need to be protected from those who would exploit for a short-term gain.

A very apt description of what the Tories do is "Exploit". It only ever benefits the Tories and whatever is exploited ends up much worse for the experience. Luckily more and more people are seeing the Tories for what they are which this time next year will be a species on the verge of extinction.

I guess that you know that if Scotland votes for Independance, it'll be a long long time before your Labour mates get back in. You planning to move to Peoples Republic of Scotland?
