Taking a tumble while training for a charity bike ride won’t stop Jan Greenwood.

The plucky mum-of-three and grandmother of eight is determined to go ahead with a planned 85½-mile cycle journey – despite severe bruising and a chipped cheekbone.

“This won’t stop me,” said Mrs Greenwood, who aims to cycle from Bradford to Blackpool to raise money for a cancer charity.

Doctors have told her she must not do any cycling for now.

“But as soon as I get the all-clear I will be back in the saddle,” she said.

Mrs Greenwood, 48, came off a bike bought specially for the charity ride while training along Wakefield Road.

Two men from a nearby sandwich shop dashed to the rescue and she was taken to hospital for treatment for badly bruised left leg, right arm and abdomen.

“But my face bore the brunt, with bruises and the chipped cheekbone,” she said.

Mrs Greenwood, of East Bowling, has been fundraising for the Bradford Royal Infirmary-based Annette Fox Leukaemia Research Fund since her dad died from the disease four years ago. But this is the first bike ride.

“I’m not a cyclist at all, but I thought this would be a real challenge,” she said.

Originally, she planned to do the ride alone. But family members have since joined in, along with friend Wendy Hudson, who has also lost a relative to leukaemia.

The ride leaves Centenary Square, Bradford, early on July 26 and the cyclists aim to be at Knott End-on-Sea, near Blackpool, within the day.

Mrs Greenwood hopes to raise £1,000 for the research fund and already has £500 in sponsorship.

Anyone who wants to sponsor her can find her at East Bowling sports and social club every Saturday and Sunday evening.
