A 42-year-old man was jailed for three years today for sexually attacking a woman in her flat the first time she asked him round.

Darren Stevenson, who still protests his innocence, added insult to injury by labelling the allegation “disgusting” and telling the jury he would not even do that “to someone who was good looking.”

Recorder Timothy Roberts QC said: “This reveals a callous disregard for this woman’s feelings and no sign of remorse whatsoever for your behaviour.”

Stevenson, of New Brighton, Oakenshaw, Bradford, was convicted of sexual assault on February 12.

The case at Bradford Crown Court was adjourned for a pre-sentence report but he told his probation officer he was innocent of the charge.

Michael Smith, for the Crown, said Stevenson’s victim suffered bruising to her thighs and back and was left with psychological trauma.

Giles Bridge, for Stevenson, said he had ongoing mental health difficulties, made worse by the stress of the court case. He had seriously self-harmed and had been seeing a psychiatric nurse.

Mr Bridge said Stevenson had cut back on alcohol since his arrest.

Recorder Roberts said Stevenson sexually assaulted the woman in her Bradford living room while they watched a film.

He forcefully removed her leggings and held her down for several minutes.

The woman, who was recovering from depression and hoping to return to work, had now been set back, the court was told.

Stevenson was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for an indefinite period.

After the case, Detective Constable Graham Fox said: “We welcome the custodial sentence handed down to Stevenson.

"He has continued to deny his involvement in this offence, forcing his victim to endure the further ordeal of giving evidence against him at court.

“I would like to take this opportunity to praise the victim for the courage she has shown throughout the process.

“I hope that this sentence can provide some form of closure for her.”
