While a repeat Grand National victory eluded Bingley trainer Sue Smith, it was still a “superb day of racing,” her husband Harvey said yesterday.
Jockey Ryan Mafia was also hoping to repeat his 2013 triumph when he won on Auroras Encore.
But his ride at Aintree this year, Mr Moonshine, finished 16th, seven lengths behind winner Pineau de Re.
Mrs Smith’s other hope in Saturday’s race, Vintage Star, was pulled up and failed to finish the course.
Speaking after the race, Harvey Smith said it been a great race nevertheless.
“It was a superb day of racing,” he said.
“All the horses came back safe and sound, all of the jockeys came back safe and sound and you can’t ask for anything more than that.”
