A food shop worker who allegedly posted racist and insensitive comments on Facebook about a woman’s tragic suicide in Shipley has been charged with a racally aggravated offence, West Yorkshire Police said today.
Daniel Johnson, 27, of Shipley, was removed from his job at the town’s branch of Fultons Food on Wednesday after his bosses were made aware of posts on his Facebook account regarding the suicide of Sobia Yousef, 36, in the nearby Asda store the day before.
Inspector Hugh Robinson, of the Shipley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "A 27-year-old man has been charged as part of an investigation in to comments posted on social media.
"Daniel Johnson, of Shipley, has been charged with a racially aggravated public order offence and released on bail to appear at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 8."
Barnsley-based Fulton Foods yesterday was moved to put a statement on the front door of its Shipley shop distancing itself from the posting.
The funeral took place yesterday for Mrs Yousef, of Frizinghall, who was said to have suffered psychiatric problems since the death of her nine-year-old five months ago.
