A calorie-bursting recipe for sticky granary gingerbread won hospital dietician Kathy Armitage the sweet taste of success.

Her tasty entry, coming in at more than 200 calories a portion, won her Bradford Teaching Hospitals’ Big Bradford bake event.

The contest idea was to mark Nutrition and Hydration Week and come up with snack creations to help get patients with poor appetitites eating.

Bradford Royal Infirmary’s principal dietician for hospital services, Adam Cartwright, said: “The competition was a great success and the winning recipe will now be added to a range of snacks which are due to be included on the hospital’s new inpatient menu.”

All shortlisted recipes were baked by head chef Donna Edmands and her team for the judges who tested each item based on its nutritional content, taste, cost and appearance.

Catering facilities manager Mark Winckles said: “I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff who took part despite their busy schedules.”
