A school is to build a greenhouse in memory of a Bradford councillor.

The gardening club at Steeton Primary will place a plaque in the greenhouse in tribute to the late Michael Kelly.

The £1,000 funding for the greenhouse came from a Bradford Council fund originally administered by Coun Kelly.

Each of the three Bradford councillors representing Craven Ward – Michael Kelly, Andrew Mallinson and Adrian Naylor – were given a budget to spend on local community projects.

Coun Kelly, of Addingham, died in February at the age of 70 after a long illness.

His colleague Coun Mallinson decided the Steeton school would be a worthy beneficiary of the cash pot.

He said: “This something lasting in Michael’s memory. Gardening and flowers were his passion.”

Other money from Coun Kelly’s budget will be spent on youth projects across Craven Ward.

Coun Kelly also had a close connection with Woodville, a centre in Keighley centre which many years has provided horticulture training for young people.

Steeton Primary School spokesman Elsie Vogeler said the greenhouse would be placed in the school’s wild area and would support existing vegetable growing.
