Bradford City players are urging people to come together ‘For Onesie Day Only’ to write their name into the record books and raise money for a baby care unit in the city.

The club is supporting the efforts of Wibsey-born fundraiser Conner Conley, 44, who is hoping to attract a world-record number of supporters to a family fun day in Lidget Green next month, all kitted out in the popular one-piece outfits.

Mr Conley, from the Dolphiger Events charity, is aiming to raise much-needed funds for the neo-natal unit at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Bantams players Kyel Reid and James Meredith donned their colourful outfits at the club’s training ground yesterday, while meeting Jamie Martin, 36, of Low Moor, whose twin boys, George and James, spent four weeks in the neo-natal unit at BRI after being born prematurely in January.

Currently sidelined with a knee injury, winger Mr Reid, 26, said: “As a parent myself, I’m happy to do anything I can to help support charities that benefit children, and it’s always nice to give something back.

“The onesie idea is a bit of fun, and it’s easy for everyone to get involved, so hopefully as many people as possible can join in the day and help break the record.”

Mrs Martin said: “The service that is provided on the special baby care ward is fantastic. The staff are so professional and even when you have to leave the babies there you know they’re in safe hands.

“A onesie isn’t something I’d normally wear, but we’re all on-board for such a good cause, even the twins!”

The onesie event, at the Field Sports and Social Club on Hollingwood Lane on Sunday, April 27, is set to feature a range of musical entertainment and family activities, with the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Khadim Hussain, also due to attend.

A new onesie-wearing world record was set just last month, when 1,184 people gathered at a school in Ringwood, Hampshire, but Mr Conley remains confident Bradfordians will help him to smash that figure and bring the record to the city.

“The event is really building up a head of steam now, and it’s great to get the backing of Bradford City,” said Mr Conley, a lifelong Bantams fan. “Breaking the record will be a harder challenge now, but I know the people of Bradford will come together and support us.”
