A new community educational facility is set to take a bow at a Bradford firm.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Khadim Hussain will officially open an education room at the Canal Road premises of Associated Waste Management on April 1.

And shortly after the ceremony, Frizinghall Community Partnership will 'christen' the new facility by holding its monthly meeting there.

The site was re-opened in January after completion of a £2.4 million roof enclosure.

AWM group marketing manager Mike Robinson said: "The on-site room has been created as part of AWM's commitment to engaging with and supporting community initiatives.

“The facility can accommodate community and school groups and demonstrates the high level of technology used to recycle the district's waste."

Educational courses have been designed with the National Curriculum in mind and address topics such as maths, English, science and technology.

As well as activities which include interactive video, work sheets and waste audits, visitors can also see first-hand how AWM divert waste from landfill by producing refuse derived fuel.

Mr Robinson said: "Exports of this renewable fuel source make AWM one of the biggest exporters in the UK of waste energy with some 145,000 tonnes leaving the country annually."

Artwork for the education room has been created by pupils at Frizinghall Primary School and AWM are running a competition for the children to design a message board to communicate with the public.

Education courses are free and available by contacting Mike Robinson on 0845 456 7128.
