Parishoners at a church forced to lock its doors because of its crumbling ceiling are being loaned a roof this weekend to help raise funds for a new one.

For the past 18 months the 130-year-old St John's Church in Greengates has been a no-go area for fear of worshippers being struck by plasterwork.

Weddings, baptisms and funerals have gone elsewhere and weekly services have moved into the pre-fab church hall next door until the health and safety ban can be lifted, said church warden Lynne Johnson.

The church has so far raised £12,000 towards a total bill which could add up to £40,000 and has recently had a £5,000 boost from the Bradford Diocese.

But today Holy Trinity Church at Idle will give them a roof over their heads so The Glen Singers can put on a fundraising concert. It starts at 2.30pm and the tickets are £5 on the door.
