Keighley’s Ukrainian community has celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of their nation’s most famous poets.

Members gathered at the Ukrainian community centre, in Henry Street, to mark the life and work of Taras Shevchenko.

A spokesman said: “We watched live celebrations from Kiev on TV and then had our own event – a reading was given outlining the significance of Shevchenko's work to the current events in Ukraine and then we went down memory lane, watching a video of a previous celebration concert.

“As the citizens of Ukraine rise up in the name of democracy, freedom and their right to self-determination, against Russia, the words of Taras Shevchenko – their most outstanding poet and national bard – remain close to their hearts.”
