A residential road in Cottingley is set to get a range of traffic-calming measures due to popular demand.

Bingley Rural councillors were contacted by householders eager to protect 30mph Manor Road from speeding drivers, and after research by highways officers a speed table and speed cushions are recommended for approval by Shipley Area Committee next Wednesday.

Tests showed the speed of which 85 per cent of vehicles travel in freely flowing conditions averaged 39mph.

Of 190 households consulted in October last year, 81 responded and 69 per cent of those were in favour of the calming scheme.

In their report to the committee, officers noted: “The receipt of only a single objection to the advertised scheme and the fact that more than two-thirds of residents who responded to the consultation exercise expressed a desire to see the scheme implemented as proposed suggests strong local support for the scheme.”

The lone objector commented they felt four buses an hour, plus vans and HGVs bumping over the humps could damage their property and that ‘gate’ type restrictions would be a less intrusive solution.

However, the report noted that pinch-points can lead to drivers accelerating to arrive at them before on-coming drivers and would also cause a loss of on-street parking.

“Traffic flows on Manor Road are ‘tidal’ with the majority of traffic in the morning travelling towards Bradford old road, while in the evening, the majority of traffic travels in the opposite direction towards Airedale Avenue.

“This ‘tidal flow’ arrangement is not conducive to pinch-points which are most effective when there is a balanced two-way traffic flow,” the report commented.

Bingley Rural councillor Michael Ellis said this was a good example of backing for a much-needed local scheme.

“It originated by people contacting us, the ward councillors, and saying ‘look, we’re fed up of people speeding down our road.”

“We take these sort of requests very seriously and so it’s always pleasing when something can be done.”

Shipley Area Committee meets in the council chamber, Bingley Town Hall on Wednesday at 6pm.
